Prince Snow and The Seven Nymphs

2019

As part of my final honour project, I knew that I wanted to create a children’s book. It was the most logical jump to move from analysing picture books to creating one.

What I created:
An illustrated children’s book that highlights the fact that gender roles and stereotypes exist and can often times be both harmful and ridiculous.

In doing this, I aim to highlight the gender stereotyping of the story, particularly that of the idea that women are given value based on their appearance and the idea that in order for women to be happy they have to marry a prince and live happily ever after.

The book is based on the well-known and problematic story of Snow White and the Seven Dwarves, but with the genders of most of the characters switched.

Some characters remained the same gender, like the huntsman, but I intended to highlight him performing gender non-conforming activities such as crying and expressing emotion, in spite of his outwardly masculine appearance.

Why I did this:
In doing this, I aim to highlight the gender stereotyping of the story, particularly that of the idea that women are given value based on their appearance and the idea that in order for women to be happy they have to marry a prince and live happily ever after.
